Re: starting problems
That sounds suspiciously like timing Caleb. Did you do anything at the distributor? Have you checked the timing?

Re: starting problems
well i put the timing belt on and it was lined up like the haynes bood described but im not 100% on it. could the valves be off the carb dosent seem like its sucking air in when it should. when i pulled the carb off one of the barrels wasnt opening but i cleaned it as well as i could with a half can of cleaner. and i didnt fool with the points other than cleaning them.

Re: starting problems
So, it was running without the backfiring it's doing now? I'd get the old timing light out and check that nothing has changed - timing wise.

Re: starting problems
i'd say that it is backfireing but not like what you'd normally see no fire just puffing smoke out of the carb and an occasional pop

Re: starting problems
If I may borrow the wisdom of Mike Bouse, start with the obvious. If it looks like cow poop, and it smells like cow poop, it's probably cow poop. Easiest thing to do with the symtoms you describe is check timing.

Re: starting problems
I'd check the firing order, and the cam timing and make sure the distributor is aligned properly

BINGO!
Re: starting problems
Its finally running and so far no more problems. You havent lived untill youve driven a multi-colour car with no county registration, no mirrors or signal lights down the highway. Antique plates are also a must in virginia no inspection or taxes

Re: starting problems
Caleb, let us know what you did to get it running. If it comes up from someone else later, we'll know what worked (or didn't as the case may be).

Re: starting problems
i took the belt off and reset everything to do with the timing and then bought a timing light i also had to pull the distributor and replace the condensers. i went over the whole car with a new wiring diagram that just so happens to match with the car unlike my other one.

You bet. Now you'll be able to pass on what you learned. Neat huh?
