Check the shock towers. That is usually the killer for these cars. Maybe some of the Jersey guys know this car?? George, Ralph, Exit??

I can see some rust issues from here. Rust is the most expensive and time consuming thing to fix on these cars in my opinion. The rust behind the wheel on the fender could be a sign of what is under the floors. Rust on the passenger front fender.....(around side light)..
Going to have to pull the carpet on both driver and passenger side and check the floors, also jack up the front and check from the under side. Behind the drivers seat is a structural cross piece and behind that is where the long trailing arms are attached, any water leaks from the rear of the top will pool there and rust out an important structural area. Pull the carpet and have a look.
As mentioned the shock towers are critical to be sound...no rust. Top inner fenders...same or you will be looking at removing the fenders...
As one that bought a cheap car and found expensive rust issues, I'm now in the camp of purchase the best RUST FREE car you can afford, the mechanicals are usually easier and cheaper to fix/ get sorted.

Thanks so much chris. the owner has a car lift and said that he'll allow me to check under the car for rust, etc. i have a certain confidence in his confidence, but im still going to have to see things with my own two eyes.
