Open 1977 Spider trunk with broken lock.

Post by Scotsman »

Hi
I'm a newbie. Original owner of 1977 Spider 124. Given me lots of good times.
Have problem with trunk lock/latch. Key stopped turning lock, maybe tumbler spinning. Couldn't release latch thru RH plate screw hole with wire. Auto lock smith couldn't open it so he drilled out the lock. He couldn't find end of connecting rod and thinks it separated from lock. Now he wants to cut lid or plate area to access latch. This doesn't appeal to me.

I would appreciate tips on how to open latch with minimum damage. A picture showing where connector joins latch in relation to plate screw hole and where to snag latch with a wire would be helpful.

Thanks

there is a black plastic rod that runs from the latch to the lock. If this came off, then the rod should drop down about 2-3" and stop. you should be able to fish it out. If you have a very small angle mirror you can probably see it thru the key hole.

if you dont mind drilling a hole behind the license plate it is real easy.. make an x from the tag mounting bolts, go up 1" and drill a hole. use a screw driver to release the latch, it can be used to trip the lock using a side to side motion, it is real easy to figure that out. put a rubber plug in the hole and forever you can not lock yourself out of the trunk

Sounds like a plan! Wish I had tried this before drilling out the lock.
