Whats this?

Post by mighty7 »

Does anyone know what this component is? It is underneath the dashboard on the driver side behind the ignition switch and above the accelerator pedal. It has a bundle of wires going into it. I reached around behind it (near the firewall) and there is a knob like protrusion but it didn't seem to be mechanically linked to anything.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

It's in the area where the O2 sensor change reminder was in my '82 but it looks different.

it's a counter box, for either the egr or O2 maintenance light. You could relabel the warning light as a timing belt replacement reminder, those boxes are set for 30000 mile activation

Thanks. That's it. My Lambda sensor switch unit. Does any one know if this was a Bosch component or since it was just a mileage counter that it was made by fiat proper? I have owned this car for more than 30,000 miles and my EXHAUST GAS SENSOR light has never come on. I am assuming the white paint on the screws in the picture are a tamper evidence paint. It doesn't look like the unit is just being reset. Is it common that these units are bypassed?

Thanks for your help. I know it has been way WAY more than 30,000 miles without a new lambda sensor, so I installed a new one and reset the counter. It did seem to make a sound like it the counting mechanism reset. We'll see in 30,000 more miles.

All good. I found it.
