Hi from topbuddy in Ontario

Hi everyone:

I own a 1981 FI Fiat Spider 2000 and have found this site invaluable to me. Just last winter I had an overheating problem and with the help of the site changed the fuel pump and fixed a no start problem. Thanks for everything.

Now I have a new problem and I have not been able to run the car for the past few weeks. It won't start. first of all it was intermittent and not it only turns over and sometime catches only to stop again. I am getting confused. First, I had no spark from the coil, but couldn't find one to replace it. One day, it ran normally so I took it to a garage for my annual safety. Quess what? it quit there and after 480 dollars and 2 days with no car, I got the call that it was running fine. I picked it up and found that the mechanic had changed my pickup coil (the old one was just over a year old) and the control module. My wife and I went shopping, bought needed supplies and returned to our RV. Later that day I went out and tried to start the car, it started then stopped. and has been doing the same thing now for over a week. When I check everything out the coil has no measured ohms reading although I do have 12 volts at the coil.

Of course now I am also suspicious of the fuel injection relays, but which one?

We are full time RVers and hope to leave Ontario sometime in Aug and head West to the coast and then down to the Southern US for the winter, crossing through Arizona and on to Texan before heading up through Kentucky etc to Ontario.
We are towing the Fiat on a trailer but it doesn't help us if I can't get it running. Very frustrating.

Thanks for any help, guys.

Where are you located? If you're near Toronto, Andy's Spiders is the place to go. Others may chime in with more suggestions once we know where you are. I'm not qualified to help with FI cars. Good luck.

To those who are interested in our whereabouts we are currently located in a park just south of Guelph, at Flamboro Valley Campground Resort on Hwy 97. We will be here until 10 Aug and then we are heading to Northern Ontario, North Bay, Timmins, Wawa, Lakehead, Kenora, Wpg. etc.
We have a new coil coming tomorrow, so will know then if that is the problem or not.
Cheers.

Hi:

Well the new coil is installed and unfortunately, that is not the problem. The symptoms remain in that the car starts, runs for 6 -8 seconds then quits. Then is won't catch again, only turnover. It is like it is not getting fuel, which sensor should I begin with to solve this and get my car back?

Is fuel flowing?
Before you start replacing a bunch of parts that might not be the issue...
Check for fuel flow.. Undo the cold start hose and when it is in a cup, crank the engine. It will or should come out at 30+ psi.
How is the fuel pump and filter?
All the connections good. thermotime switch, connection at the coolant T can come loose.
I don't know much about the dual relay issues , but it is located under the glove box on a drop down tray.
