Hi all,
I just picked up a 79 spider 2000 needing a full resto. Some rust on floorboards, entire interior eaten by raccoons, looks like hell, but should be a fun project! I've wanted a spider since I was about 10, when my father's cousin wanted to give him a red 79 with a blown clutch for free... and he said no thanks! I begged him to take it and keep it for me, I certainly could have fixed it at some point.
I got this from an original owner - 81k miles then parked under a carport in 1991 and sat there ever since. As of now, it'll start with starter fluid. No gas in tank but I will pull interior and check the fuel lines before I go adding any. No brakes...
Well, some 30 years later I finally got one. I'll be searching these forums for answers to all sorts of puzzles, and may even ask for help when something is baffling.
My game plan:
Pull interior.
Strip floors, weld in patches in rust areas. So far it's not looking TOO bad.
Once floor is solid and POR-15'd, check/replace fuel lines and work on mechanical.
Get engine running, change timing belt, possibly some seals if leaking.
Fix brakes... probably new master cylinder, lines, rebuild calipers, new rotors.
Finish all mechanical and get roadworthy.
Do all body work
Interior and top

Great plan. There are some other LI guys on the board. The Fiat Freak Out, the national group get-together was held out your way in August. Too bad you weren't around then.
After the POR put down some modern insulation on the floor and double on the trans tunnel. Cuts down tons of heat into the cabin. Pleanty of links here with pictures and how to's.
Keep posting your progress and good luck.

I'm in commack, just a hop and a skip away.
Yes, quite a project and getting bigger by the minute. But I asked for it. Nobody in their right mind buys a 34 year old fiat in the northeast!
