Starter/Starter Solenoid/Stud?

Post by NimrodJess »

Okay, so... the beast won't start. She will push-start (at least when the battery is holding a charge), and will RUN, but won't start on her own. Turn the key, the fuel pump (I think) primes, you can hear the electronics working, we have lights and bells and everything else, but no crank.

Right now, the battery is dead, but we have a spare I can try when I get home from work, but my question is:

Is there an easy way of determining if the issue is the starter or the solenoid?

Also, my solenoid stud has a random black plastic spade connector hanging out that isn't attached to anything... Can you show me a picture of what yours looks like so I might deduce where this bit goes?

Thanks, guys!

EDIT: I lied. Now it won't even spark.

you can take a big screwdriver and short across the 2 solenoid lugs. Expect a big spark and a nice arc burn in your screw driver. to keep this from happening, you have to be fast and accurate with your short. The starter will not engage doing this but will spin free. There is a very short small wire that runs between the starter windings and the solenoid. If this is broken, your starter wont work. it is possible the connector that is missing a wire goes to this wire.

Just wanted to update, this ended up being the starter. Put a new one in and she ran great... Now onto the next issue.

Question - I have same issue, ignition wire is off. I have a 68 spider and am having difficulty getting the top bolt for the starter off. I would appreciate any suggestions.

for the starter top bolt. Socket, universal joint, 10 in extension and rachet. Should be enough room laying under the car on jack stands to reach your hand up to make sure the socket is on the bolt. Just put in Marks new starter a couple weeks ago. Took less than a half hour. biggest challenge was getting the old starter out of the engine bay around all of the other stuff.
