Ignition coil runs very HOT!?

Post by mrspahr »

I have an 81 spider and after 2 months of searching for the real problem, Electrical, poor grounds and bad coil.
I have now repaired grounds and replaced the coil. Car is running good, but the COIL gets very HOT after just a few miles
of running. Is this normal?
Also, Is there a major ground strap that connects to the engine block? If so, can someone tell the location.
Thankyou Again for all your help! Couldn't have done it without you!

Hi!
I have the same from '81. Be sure that the wire from the rotor cup is going to the - and that the pink is going to the + of the ignition coil.
If I rememebr correctly, you have yellow wire , white/brown and rotor cup wire to the - ( total 3 wires ) and pink and white to the + ( total 2 wires ) . Also , be sure that the coil is properly attached to the dissipator.
I had the same problem of you and I found out that the coil was connected in the opposite way. It works because the coil is not really polarized BUT it seems that if you cross the wire, it gets hot.
My car was running properly without problem but really hot ignition coil. Now solved.

Coils get hot. Is it secured to something metal to take some of the heat?? How hot is hot?? Is this "hot" causing problems?? If not, why are you concerned??
