Hi Gents,
just bought a ’75 1.8, after a drive-by whim to look at it.
It looks like a good runner, almost no rust, most things kinda work, and has been debumpered, header, roll bar, and a webber that I havn’t made positive id of yet.
Been reading lots of posts, thanks for the jump-start on understanding.
Upon taking it home I had a fuel starvation issue that was getting progressively worse, stalled five times on hills, had restart and creep up them, barely made it back.
Turns out the tank inlet and outlet were reversed. Changed the fuel filter.
But the original fuel pump still wasn't putting out enough. Put in a universal pump, 3-4 psi, much better.
But i should have just taken the old pump apart, the screen was just full of sediment!
Also a hot-start problem that caused me to pop start it backwards a few times to get it home. I suspect the initial timing is too far advanced. But I heard no detonation and it ran very well when it had fuel.
The shifting is a bit knotchy, its that typical? Any fluid recommended for best shifting?
I suspect there may be a charging issue also. intend to go through and upgrade the power distribution with some relays and buses. Adjusted the Voltage regulator, it was hitting 17.5V! Intend to add a volt meter somewhere to keep an eye on it. Electronics is my profession, so that’s just hobby time.
Seems like a lot of parasitics in the driveline, the thing doesn’t coast for long. Well, compared to a modern car.
First question. I’ve been looking up keyswitches, could you guys point me to one for sale that works with the ’75 electric fuel pump system? My search has been futile!.
Also, been reading the 3-point seatbelt threads, its really high on my priority.
Does one weld a bung on the roll bar for an attachment point, I suspect?
I just got some seatbelts at a boneyard
I see one doesn’t go far without their toolkit. There must be some existing discussions about tools and spares to keep in the trunk.
Thanks a bunch, look forward to the fun here!
Glad to be here from CT
