Re: Wrong Throw Out Bearing ?
Hey, thanks for asking..I just put the trans back in late today. I used the plastic throw out bearing that came with the clutch kit and had the flywheel refaced.hamlet wrote:How's this going?
When I first drove it, it acted the same (wouldn't down shift into second without double clutching and revving, but after I took it for a longer workout(ride) it seemed to start working better and would downshift. I'll take it for another short trip tomorrow to see if it's definitely okay or not. I wonder if I just need to get the cobwebs out after the rebuild? I hope that and the throwout bearing change is all it needed.

Re: Wrong Throw Out Bearing ?
Well, I'm having a problem similar to this one. Same Valeo throwout bearing, clutch and pressure plate with a newly surfaced flywheel. I've got the adjustment nut at the very beginning of the threads on the cable, as in as close to the fork and as far away from the end of the cable as possible. I'm having trouble getting the car into second, even with brand new synchros and shift forks from AR. I also have a new clutch fork. I'm a bit stumped.

How much play do you have on your clutch pedal before you feel resistance? It should be approx. 1", if you have more travel than that you probably need to tighten the adjustment nut more.hamlet wrote: I've got the adjustment nut at the very beginning of the threads on the cable, as in as close to the fork and as far away from the end of the cable as possible.
I still have to double clutch and rev sometimes, but I am living with it for now. It is really odd you have the same problem,as I don't understand how the clutch or throwout could only cause that problem with 2nd, vs all the gears? I am stumped on mine too.

Re: Wrong Throw Out Bearing ?
I literally can't adjust it any tighter. It's as far from the end as can be. I did have an oil leak from the transmission due to the rear housing to shifter extension housing being not so tight, and maybe that sapped too much oil and I'm devoid of some needed lubricant, so I'll check that soon. The clutch, however, is really a problem. I'm not sure what the problem is. I guess the new throwout bearing/clutch fork combo sits too close to the pressure plate to start, therefore allowing me no room to budget with the clutch cable end.

Can you post a picture of the throwout lever, and clutch cable?

A couple of years ago I bought the same setup from vicks and could not get it to work on my 79 2L. Sent the parts back for a refund.

No, I could not get the clutch to engage. If you are only having problems with the 2nd gear I doubt its the clutch.

Yes and only down shifting(into 2nd is an issue), so I agree, just wanted do to be sure you didn't have that specific issue, or it would have made me wonder if it was the clutch.lanciahf wrote:No, I could not get the clutch to engage. I'll take a picture in a few days -- it's a rough week and I won't be able to spend time on the car for a bit.

It turned out to be the firewall. The car is cautiously drivable right now, but I'll take it to my friend's shop and weld the firewall back together and provide an angle iron for support.

That cracked firewall seems to be a common problem on these cars. Many have been repaired with a reinforcement plate added to strengthen the area around the clutch cable. Mine was repaired by a previous owner and I didn't even notice it until I swapped my engine about 1 1/2 years after I bought the car.
