First of all, a special thanks to all those who post and encourage us newbies. After many years of sitting, I am working to get back on the road. After checking the fuel tank (previous post) I decided to start with the timing belt, water pump and seals before trying to start the engine. Car ran fine before it went into hibernation. Hand cranked easily, all the pulleys lined up with timing marks, and managed to loosen crankshaft nut with little difficulty. As Daveje pointed out in his 2009 post, the nut is a 22m LH thread.
Things were going as expected. That is to say, that I found two of the seals were leaking pretty heavily. Removal of the timing belt cover was interesting. Front cover was easy. Aft cover came apart in 3 different pieces and required removal of the crankshaft pulley and the intake cam pulley. Once I got everything off and took some pix, I decided to remove the waterpump. Pretty straight forward, but was very surprised by what I found. I am not sure what that black goo is....reminds me of a rubber impeller that has disintegrated. I am really afraid that is is oil, but it doesn't make sense to me as I thought oil would have risen to the top. All of the coolant that drained from radiator and the water pump looked OK. Will appreciate ideas on how to proceed from here. Photos to follow. Thanks. Bob

use a garden hose and flush things out, go into the heater outlet in the head and back flush, as well as pressure spray all you can thru the water pump opening. i have seen worse
i would also flush the radiator out from the top and the bottom until clean

Beek, Thanks for the prompt response. I did as you suggested. Still need to get the radiator flushed out as you suggested. I have posted pix of the block after flushing. I flushed from the water pump hole and then from the heater inlet. I expected more crud to come out, but was pleasantly surprised that it didn't. Thanks for your help. Any additional advice before I install new pump? Bob

your gasket surface looks nasty. make sure you get that flat and smooth. that is a hard area to work on in the car. may need something like a 3/4" melomine or particle board with sticky back sandpaper for the job.
