Crinkle painted timing belt cover
Crinkle painted timing belt cover
Thought this came out pretty good. Had it painted silver. Always a pain to keep it clean.

Sanded with 200. Just too rough up the existing paint. Cleaned with acetone. You spray 3 heavy coats of crinkle waiting 10 minutes between coats. In about 6/8 hours it crinkles. Cool stuff. The stuff I used is Plastcoat Wrinkle paint.
Re: Crinkle painted timing belt cover
Here's the part #. PlastiKote 217 Black Wrinkle Paint - 12 Oz.
$10.00 on Amazon. You should me able to find it locally at Autozone or Pepboys.
I did the dash of a 68 MGB with this paint. Came out looking like original. I think it would also look good on the rear view mirror of the 124.

Looking good!
Are you going to do anything with the valve covers?

Re: Crinkle painted timing belt cover
After polishing, what do you coat them with to keep them from re-oxidizing?

Re: Crinkle painted timing belt cover
I just use Semichrome paste. With the low humidity here the oxidation isn't that bad.

Did you paint your exhaust manifold?
Re: Crinkle painted timing belt cover
Yes, I use Thermo-Tec High Heat Coating. Good to 2000 F.

Re: Crinkle painted timing belt cover
I tried doing the same with my cam covers and found it too slow of a process. What are you using to sand/grind down the surface to that nice of a smooth finish and shine?

Re: Crinkle painted timing belt cover
Cam covers are aluminum...I'd strip any paint and hit them with a buffing wheel...I've seen it done...looks awesome polished up.

Hey Tuk,
I notice you don't have the heat shield over the exhaust manifold. I'm wondering if that might cause problems with the paint on your hood, especially when the weather gets warm.
