Curious lightbulb placement

Post by toplessexpat »

Hi All

I'm sure this has been answered before (but I can't find the thread). Any ideas what the bulb is for that's wired into the dash lamp circuit - but the entire illuminated bulb is surrounded in a steel bulb holder attached to the dashboard brace, about 5 inches to the left of center (in a LHD car)?

No real need for me to know - apart from curiosity.....

Possibly you are referring to the bulb for the fiber optic cables that go to the heater control panel for lighting?
I think it uses the same bulb as the gauges.

If your fiber optics aren't glowing all that well you can take each fiber end and trim it slightly, and you can put a superbright LED in the holder. Lights those center console indicators nicely. I did this on another make of car that uses the same system and it really made a huge difference.

These are the ones that people seem to be using in the dash:

I haven't looked at the fibreoptics yet --- but they're actually fine to me already!
