hazard switch visual info?
hazard switch visual info?
I did the hazard switch search and read the thread. Convinced me that this seems to be another weak point in this vehicle, which might explain why there wasn't one on this car when I bought it.
I'm trying to find a visual of exactly what this switch connects to and how. I'm currently waiting on a shop manual and a new switch from IAP. I have the artigue diagrams and am trying to figure out how to use them. Also will be installing a cig lighter which has never been on the car.
So I'm hooking these two things up without the benefit of documenting the old set up.
I already have the lighter so I could go ahead and wire that up, if I had a clue as to what wires to use.
My knowledge of wiring has come from zero to just above zero (found and cleaned grounds-installed headlight kit).
Given that level of ignorance on the subject, how do I go about finding the wires I need to connect?
Wait for the shop manual in the hope that it has some visual help that I can make sense of?

Re: hazard switch visual info?
i am assuming you have the round push-button style. You should have an octagonal plastic receptacle in the middle of the dash with 8 wires coming out of it. This plugs into the hazard switch. As I recall there is a separate 12v that plugs into the middle.

Re: hazard switch visual info?
Tim, if you can try printing the wiring diagram. I know it sounds off to print something that you can read on the screen, but I found it easier to trace a circuit with the print a little larger and in paper in front of me. If you are luck most of the wires are in the area they are supposed to be. For the components I would locate the component such as the hazzard switch. Trace the circuit back to the fuse box and the other way to ground. Again, if you are lucky the wires going into the fuse box have not been altered. The wires on the diagram are all color coded going into and out of components such as the cigarette lighter and the hazard. The fuses protect electric devices down stream from frying in the event of a surge so power (high amp flow) runs through the fuse box first, then to the component and then to ground.
Do you have an aftermarket radio? Prior owner may have unhooked the wire going into the cigarette lighter to supply power to the radio. The hazzard switches fail frequently as you mentioned. Rather than fix with a new switch some owners will bypass the switch. What year is your car again?

Re: hazard switch visual info?
If the Spider is a 1978, then it should have the rectangular switch in the radio console. The wiring on that is pretty simple.
2 wires for the light, 2 wires turn on the hazards, 2 wires turn off the turn signal circuit.

Re: hazard switch visual info?
So Im driving down the freeway today when all of a sudden my hazard lights come on , cars behind me start backing off and I escape into the emergency lane trying to figure out what's going on… the hazard switch wouldn't click back in ,it was broken.. found some tape in my boot stuck it down and off I went.
Thinking the switch was broken after removing it from the dash I started looking for a new one on ebay.. to my shock surprise over $100 plus post to OZ… I'm thinking lets try and fix it.. after I had finally worked out how to open the silly thing it was obvious that the small pin inside was bent, so after some very delicate surgery put it all back together and I'am a $100 richer

...and in beer currency PininF that converts to about 48 Becks. Nice one!!
Tim, given that vandor says its the rectangular switch (like the early Spiders) I'll have a bat at trying to decipher my wiring diagram for the rocker type Hazard switch. Having done a couple conversions from left hand drive to right hand drive I quite like the challenge of getting these things right.
My hand book is a Clymer Publications one for the earlier Spiders.
At the Hazard Switch:
(H) Red wire from the flasher indicator junction which is the feed from the indicator switch on the steering column.
(V) Double connection with 2 x White wires which bridges the cigarette lighter, Hazard switch and courtesy light.
(i) Yellow and Black wire from the handbrake on switch ?? I don't know why but that's what the books says
Grey to the flasher can.
At the cigarette lighter:
Black and White wire from the courtesy light.
Double connection with a Red wire and a White wire (white wire on this double connection goes to the hazard switch, Red is the feed)
Double connection with two yellow wires (one comes from the panel light rheostat switch, the other goes to Fiat wiring spaghetti pot).
I hope this helps some..

Re: hazard switch visual info?
I had the same problem with my round hazard. I suspect that is the problem with 90% of them. As you mentioned, a little straightening of the cam follower pin and you are good to go.

Re: hazard switch visual info?
I have not been able to get my turn signals to work and I noticed that the emergency flasher button didn't work either. Am I correct in saying that if nothing works the emergency flasher control is the problem?
Just checking as I haven't had time to remove it and check it out.

Re: hazard switch visual info?

Re: hazard switch visual info?
Well Gene, looking at the wiring diagram there seems to be some sort of connection between the two. I couldn't say 100% that a faulty hazard switch would be the root of your problem without getting in there with a test meter. It's possibly been discussed on here before.Meistro wrote:I have not been able to get my turn signals to work and I noticed that the emergency flasher button didn't work either. Back to Tim's original issue here being what wires go where, these artigue diagrams, is it possible to download them as I'd be interested in keeping a copy on hand.
Many thanks

Re: hazard switch visual info?
thanks fi8 and everybody. it's the rectangular one and I don't have it in my hand yet, but that was tremendously helpful to get me started at parsing through the snarl of wires.
Have a newly salvaged radio console on the way as well as a shop manual next week, so looking to take some big steps then with regard to heater core replacement,re installing the newly insulated console, and adding the hazards and lighter.
She actually picked the perfect month to need this stuff. Snow is piling up past the window on the barn, happy to be tucked in there and making some needed improvements.
Thinking Spring.
