turn signal glitch

When I turn on either signal, it blinks on the dash indicator once. Then it flashes very slowly, but not on the indicator on the speedo, it only indicates the first blink. Also, one flash about every 5 seconds is retardedly slow. Any ideas? [I did swap out my front bumper lights for some in-grill LED lights, maybe they don't draw enough current to heat the flasher?] Still what about the indicator issue?

The indicator does that if there is not enough current going through the flasher and it 'thinks' a bulb is burned out.
They make flashers specifically made for LED bulbs.

when i installed LED with a flasher, the dash indicator light did not work. Also LED flashers have the same plug in geometry but the lugs are not the same and the wires need to be switched.

I think I'll add an additional bulb in line to draw more current from the front so it should act normal again.

I having a problem with my turn signal as well. Both indicators work well when the head lights are off. When the head lights are on the right side does not blink but the left one works fine. Any ideas?

I had the same issue with my 74. Possible fault could be earth connections for the indicators/lamp assemblies, they could probably do with a clean up and general inspection for worn, damaged, or frayed wires. Loose or poor earth connection can make the blinkers fade the way you have explained.

Also check the inside of each bayonet fitting where the bulbs slot into for any signs of rust or gunk build up.

I had this same problem when I bought my 80 Spider. It turned out that the prior owner installed a bulb in the front bumper turn signal that had the two contact base instead of the one contact base. This is the bulb I'm referencing that caused this same problem. I replaced it with the single contact base and the problem was corrected.

My vote is for a grounding issue. All spiders previously owned had fickle turn signals and it was usually the grounds needed a good cleaning. Bulbs corrode, old fuses with corrosion, poor grounds with corrosion, old alternator with new stereo can all add up very quickly to poor electrical system operations. The fact that the condition gets worse when you turn on the headlights on is a clue about grounds and current across greater resistance than designed. Does your battery hold a charge?

The battery holds a charge very well no problem there. The previous owner had taken the bumpers off and used round motorcycle turn signals placing them in the holes where the bumper shocked had been. I brand new jeep turn indicators placing them in the holes where the original wiring had come through to go to the old bumpers. I did not want to use the original bumpers either. I found some bumper over riders andvwelded them to the bumper shocks. Anyway that's another story. I aappreciate your advise I will check the ground. What do you mean by "earth connection"?

If you go to the board index and tap on the "restoration" box the go down about 10 or 12 post to the one titled '78 restoration the are pics of what I am talking about with regard to the jeep turn indicators and bumper over riders.

I would check the grounds, especially around the taillights. Also, the brown wire fix may help.

"earth" is what we call "ground"...same-same

Because less current can cause similar problems. The brown wire fix gives more current to the entire electrical system.

What do you mean by brown wire fix. I understand the lack of current, but don't know what you mean by "fix" . What exactly should I do?
