playing with gauges I popped the speedo cable..

I have that factory looking speedo cable crimped on the back and it pulled out. Any trick or need replaced? It seems to not want to go back in place despite the fact that I cut the crimp. Any tricks here to make it easy?

What year is your car. It is either a plastic locking mechanism with a ring to push/lock on or it is a screw on. You can feed some cable into the cabin from engine compartment to give some room to work.

81' It looks like a plastic boot with a crimp clamp, but it didn't seem to want to slip back into place even though I snipped the clip so it could slip back over the speedo input. maybe just a stubborn bitch because its old and theres barely any room to work.

I'm not sure what you snipped. The plastic lock ring slides forward an back to attach to the Speedo. The ring slides forward locking the prongs on the ridge of the speedo. I have seen one that broke attached with a hose clip.

Well, that clarified it. I explored it and discovered that the "sliding lock" thing was still on the speedo. The rubber clip that I thought was the fastener was the clamped boot on the cable that holds the cable onto the "sliding lock" thing but it was actually broken. Mystery solved. New cable needed.

Give this a try. Take the cable loose from the trans. Push it thru to the dash and install it to the speedo. Push the speedo into the dash and secure, reattach to tranny. Worked for me!
