New Headlights for 1979 Spider
New Headlights for 1979 Spider
I'd like to have brighter headlights than the stock ones here - what would you recommend and how complicated is it to switch?

Re: New Headlights for 1979 Spider
Hi aslives, a much discussed topic and plenty of good info to be found using the search function.
The standard Spider headlight system can benefit from a relay upgrade for better lighting. This would be my first port of call even if i was to be looking at globes with more wattage.
I punched in "headlight relays" and came up with about 14 pages.
This one link is straight to the point though there are many others to read through.

I purchased the said kit in that link and although I haven't gotten around to fit it yet (yeah, yeah, I know... ) I look forward to good results given the great feedback on it.
Good luck..

I replaced my original headlights with new incandescent headlights and did the "brown wire fix". When I have my bright lights on, people flash theirs at me now. The brightness of the headlights is quite good but I think the field of view is a bit narrow.
Check your voltage at the headlights before doing anything. That will tell you what you need to do to upgrade.

Headlight relay in for a coule years now. 1. Easy to install provided your headlight buckets are in good shape to start with, I think it took me about two hours start to end. 2. kit provides good grounding options. 3. Kit has worked flawlessly and has the huge benefit of taking current off the ignition switch. One of the best upgrades I've done to the electrical system. I would recommend everyone do the brown wire fix as well. Makes those old dingy headlights come to life and improves your lie of sight significantly.
The H4 bulbs are awesome. +1 on starting with the relay kit on a Saturday afternoon. Then decide if you want the cool H4 bulbs.
