Okay, this may sound stupid, but does anyone have a tip on how to locate the driver side mirror? On my 69, I have the original mirror, and it appears that it is attached in the correct place, although there is another hole that is not being used. I can't find any position for the mirror head that will allow me to see anything useful behind me, mostly just ground and the side of the car. Any tips for getting the location of the screw holes so that it will work? I know that I will have to fix some holes before I paint, but I can live with that.

Re: driver side mirror placement
I had this issue.
The PO of my car took the side view mirror off and painted over the holes.
I could not find them at all.
So I took the door panel off and found where they were on the inside.
Inside the door, I saw some "washer" type discs bonded to inside of the door skin.
At the center of these "washers" I could see the bondo filling the holes.
I used a small drill bit in a small drill (makes sense) and drilled from the inside out to create guide holes.
Then I drilled the appropriate size holes from the outside.
Problem solved.
Hope this helps.
