82 Spider WOnt Start

Post by drgellar »

Car was running great. I moved and stored car over winter, outside at families house. When I went to pick up car, would not start. I am at my wits end. I taced the wire to the starter, I have power. Somewhere between there and the ignition I lose my ground but still get power. Car turns over but not getting fire. Am I making sense? I unplugged power from starter and heard a popping noise like a bad wire or something. ANy ideas where to look or what to do. Please about to give up and dont want to.

DR:

Do you have 12 volts at the coil and at the dizzy?

what year is the car? How do you know that you don't have spark? Which wire did you unplug from the starter, battery cable or the small wire with the push-on connector?

Year would be nice Sorry

It is an 82 Spider. I unplugged the wire before it gets to the starter. The wires that just push together. As far as the spark, I have unplugged the wire from the ignition coil and one from the cap.

While it may not be exactly the same issue, there is, on the top of the crossmember over the radiator on my 82 Spider, a push-on connection that sometimes comes lose and kills the engine.

If your engine is turning over then the starter is working fine. If it does not fire, then the problem is in the ignition system. I am having exactly the same problem. Stored for the winter, started up right away then died. Changed fuel, filters - nothing. Checked coil wire no spark. Aha - lots of gas but no ignition. Changed the coil - still the same problem. I am now waiting for an ignition module which is located behind the coil, mounted to the heatsink. If that doesn't work I will have to track back all the wires going to the coil to ensure it is getting pwer (something I should have done first!). By the way, the ignition module is not original and was very rusted at the terminals while the coil itself was original - on the car since 79.

the one thing that affects these cars when they sit is electrical connector corrosion. Check the connector harness to the ignition switch and the fuses and holders.

If there is spark but no fuel, is it possible that for some reason the air gate in the inlet is blocked or stuck, not allowing the fuel pump to become energized? A mouse house in the intake?

I put in a new ignition module, cleaned all the terminals and it started up right away. Having said that, Mark may have been right. The terminals on the old module were corroded but I did not bother to test the old one once the new one worked fine. By the way, both the coil and the module are interchangeable with older model GM ignition systems. Shop around as the prices vary greatly. Hope this helps.

the modules are the same, but GM coils mounted in the dist cap and are completely different than the Fiat coils
