Unusual starting routine (or not?)

I recently purchased a 1975 124 Spider. Although I’ve owned more than 30 cars this is my first Fiat. My question is this: when starting the car the first turn of the key to the start position initiates what sounds like an electric motor (fuel pump?) and the engine does not turnover. I then back off the key and on the second turn to the start position the starter engages and the car starts. This 2 twist process happens every time. Is that normal or do I have a problem? Thanks.

I have a 74 and mine doesn't work like that. If I turn the key to the first position the fuel pump starts. I then push it to the second (start) position to engage the starter motor, and release it when it starts letting the key go back to the first (run) position. It's just like all the other cars I have ever owned.

Not normal. My 75 does the same. It's either a wiring fault to the starter motor or ( but probably not ) a duff starter motor.
I'm getting into mine this weekend to try and isolate the problem. I'll let you know how I get on...
