its typical to have an oil leak from the base of the dizzy and runs on to the exhaust manifold.

Hi Phaetn
You must be looking forward to driving your prize.
I figure a few more rains to get rid of that salt and i'll be drvving soon.
A minor oil leak shouldn't prevent getting a safety check around here.
Hell if they had to be dry, mine would have never gotten on the road!

Hope to met you at one of the ICCO events.

Enjoy and have fun

Thanks, Spiderdan!

The leak is of exhaust gases with really noticeable fumes in the cabin. Even though it's a convertible, it's a safety issue. Mech says that's the only thing stopping it.

I'll worry about oil and coolent leaks later. :)

Looking forward to the warmer weather!!!

Exhaust leak?
Dan bad, I assumed an oil leak.
Yep that should be fixed. I had an exhaust leak once, just needed a new gasket and some bolts tightened.
Good luck and CU soon.

I also wanted to point out that our cars need to be appraised for registration  however, we do not require e-tests due to the age

Yup, thanks 4uall, the mech is also an appraiser so it's all getting done - safety, appraisal, pics for insurance, etc. Depending on what's required for the exhaust gas leak I'm hoping to be on the road by next week. Once I get it home then I can start fiddling with the carb and sort out a backfire / poor throttle response issue. Pressure was low on cylinder #1, but not a deal-breaker.

I don't think the car was run at all last year (reg was a 2012 sticker) so it's been sitting a while. Will need a tank of fresh gas and then I'll dig into it.

It has a an EMPI DFEV 32/36 and Mark Allsion's distributorless ignition, so I'm quite happy about that, plus the 4-2-1 manifold/exhaust. Not sure where it's leaking.

It will all get sorted out in due course. :) Here's a pic form before the test run:

Finally took some decent pics on Easter weekend. Took the car on the highway for not more than 15 mins each way to get to a lake for lunch with family/friends. Still some misfiring that I'll try to eventually sort out. Not really sure if it's rich or lean: black pipe and fuel smell suggests rich; hesitation with throttle position suggests lean as plugs are a good colour otherwise. I suppose I would have to do a plug chop at speed to really find out!

Will order a jet kit and work both up and down to see what's better. I may never sort it out until I address a compression issue in cylinder #1 which will affect how it draws from the carb and may have blow by, etc.

In the meantime, a couple of pics:

and a short video.

Very happy with the car so far. :) I didn't buy it for bottom dollar, but wanted one that was as good as I could get on my budget, knowing it will need more work later. I think it's a very good working example of a small bumper Spider with some nice fixings and a body that's in pretty good shape... Interior needs a lot of work, but I'm more concerned with mechanicals than the interior aesthetic at the moment.

Cheers,
phaetn

The car looks great. Wish just one of mine looked that nice, even from 20 feet! I love the early Spiders with chrome and the small bump hood. Have fun!!
