'81 New rocker panel install

Post by rjkoop »

I'm about to install a new passenger side outer rocker panel on my '81 (old ones were rusted out). I thought they would just slip right on but I think they may need some trimming/bending. And the top lip seems wide (about 3/4"). The overhang from the body panel to the frame (where the rocker panel attaches) is only about 1/4". Also the frame near the rear wheel seems to flare outwards and there is also a rubber spacer on the panel.

Any tips on installing these things? Should they be flush with the body panel above? Here's a few pics...

The new panel...

Actually took off the driver's side trim pieces and it looks like it does need to be trimmed off and the overhang from top panel to rocker panel is normal.

I forgot how much was covered up on my rocker panels. You barely see the panel underneath.

Didn't really matter too much that I put Toyota Beige on the panels!
