1980 2L engine.

Post by zappi »

Hi all. I have a question or rather a series of questions? I purchased my 1980 spider last August. Here is my dilema. My alternator is on the passenger side of vehicle though I am told it should be on the driver side. The engine serial number is above the oil filter with a number sequence that I believe is from a 74 spider. However this week my water pump went (original) and I ordered a water pump with a 1980 designation and it was identical. So in a nutshell my engine appears to be a host of many year model applications.

This being said, I have a request to make if I may? Would any of my fellow 1980 carburated spider fans have any information and maybe some pictures of their engines, so I may compare.

Thanking you all very much in advance.

Hey Mike, those cam covers look real good from a distance. They look great, for instance, from out here.
Kidding of course. They do look better in place.

1980 Alternator would have been on the driver side. Sounds to me like you have an 1800 in there.

You can actually mount the alternator on either side if you have the brackets for it, but the wiring would have to be modified, which is a terrible idea - our electrics are fragile enough.

I have the engine numbers in the engine modifications and maintenance book:
