starter wiring question - now with photo!

Post by bbuckl »

I just put my motor back in with a new gear reduction starter. I currently (pardon the pun) have 3 wires attached to the post on the starter and one small red wire clipped on. When I was looking at the fine wiring job that I had done, I noticed a medium sized green wire that is just sitting there floating in space with no place seemingly to go. Any ideas where it would go? Is that the wire that connected the starter to the solenoid? If so, what do I do with it?

I'm confused...

Thanks,
Brian

What are the three wires you have connected to the starter post? I think there should be a brown wire, a black from the alternator, and a green from the battery, (at least there is on my '81)

Its this green wire...I have a thick battery wire and two other wires connected to the starter post. I just don't know where this green wire goes

I have three wires on the post of the starter...The large battery wire, this green wire, which I now suspect has to be attached to the alternator, and a brown wire.

I guess my question should be, does this black wire (looks like 10 or 12 guage) also get attached to the alternator post?

Thanks,
Brian

Where does the other end of the wire go?

Is the wire insulation actually green? Or is it a black wire with a green sleeve over it? Look close by the ring terminal. If it is a black with a green sleeve, that's the wire I have between the starter post with the other wires and the alternator (+)

If it is truly a green wire, any chance that is the secondary ground, wired from the chassis to the transmission housing? Not sure why it would be laying up near the alternator though?

Sorry while I was updating my post, your post update came in.

There should be two black wires on the alternator, I suspect that green wire is a black wire with a green sleeve over it, so one end is on the starter post with the brown and large green wire, the other end would be on the alternator with another black wire.
