Bringing Frankenstein to life.

Post by jbrice »

Hello everyone. I just joined because I bought a 1980 Spider that has been sitting since 1998. Of course I'm trying to get it started and running into problems. Basically here is what I have done.
Tested fuel pump with 12volts and it runs. Tank is trashed so I set up a separate tank with fresh gas. Blew out fuel filter and line to the rail. Ran several diagnostic tests and determined that CSV is not getting power (planning to replace thermo time switch). With CSV out I sprayed some gas into the intake and it runs and sounds great. It will not stay running so I'm assuming my injectors are bad/clogged. Injectors do get power according to my test light.
Questions:
Can I get the injectors rebuilt or should I buy new ones?
How do I disconnect the injectors from the rail? Is there a trick to disconnecting the high pressure fittings on those fuel lines?
Should my fuel pump run with the key in the run position? It only seems to run when the car actually starts and not when cranking.
I really have about a thousand more questions, but that's a good start. I'm planning on putting 12v to each injector just to see if they click, but even if they click they may still be clogged right? Any advice would be appreciated.

You should probably re-post this under the engine or fiat related section so more folks will see it.

As far as the injectors, I seem to recall that they are held in by either a bolted down color or a rotating collar at the head. The hoses between them and the rail are crimped on from the factory so you'll have to cut them off. You can replace the lines with hose clamps later, several vendors sell the correct diameter hose.

As far are servicing them, absolutely! I have had very good results from Witch Hunter Performance (Witchhunter.com). They will basically test each one, rebuild them if possible and send you back units ready to install along with a detailed before and after report on each injector. If they cannot rebuild one they can usually supply a replacement at a decent price. No affiliation but I've used them successfully on a number of injectors sets from different cars including an 80 Spider.

Welcome to the best forum for Fiat Spiders on the planet!

A quick note on the injectors... in addition to Witch Hunter Performance mentioned above, several forum members have used the services of OK Injectors (http://www.okinjectors.com/). You can send in your whole fuel rail, pressure regulator, and injector assembly and they'll diagnose it, clean & repair, and then re-test it. You'll get a report showing before and after. I have no affiliation with OK Injector but have been in contact with them to arrange service based on the success others have had.

Welcome aboard!

Thank you both!!! I'm going to remove the fuel rail and inspect and bench test the injectors and just see what they look like. I may send them in and you both gave me exactly what I needed, a reputable place to send them.
