Russ thanks. I will post in the morning the pics and description. I punched the info into the internet regarding this multi meter but it didn't appear. Mastercraft Smart Multimeter 052-0726-0. It was one of the father's day specials! Battery in the back.

FYI I got the brakes finally on. Will post this story later as well. Working on this car all day can tire me out for a good relaxing rejuvinating sleep. Hope you had a great father's day and sleep well my friend.

Here is a picture of the new Smart Multimeter.

It gave off a beep and the digital readout said ALL which the instruction indicates this means the resistance vakue exceeds maximum range.

Everyone including you are very helpful in explaining how to test the coil. I think I will return this particular multimeter and get one with dials. Buy the way it was a Father's Day "special" at hugh price reduction!

I will then go back to testing the coil and work towards diagnosing the ignition electrical issure.

The pictured meter would seem to have four functions, DC volts (=) line after), OHMs (resistance), AC volts (~ line after), and some other resistance range. The "smart" part is most likely auto ranging within each function. You just need to figure out how to toggle it between the functions. You need to set it to read DC volts and test power at the + terminal of the coil to ground with the key on. Until you know you are getting battery voltage TO the coil there is no use trying to trouble shoot a dead ignition circuit.

BTW, you can test the voltmeter by taking a reading across the battery. Does the manual explain how to switch between functions? I am quite sure it is not smart enough to read your mind and know what function you are trying to measure. :D

Finally, what do you mean by a deep discount? After all any $8 meter from your local auto parts place will be sufficient for almost any Fiat Spider work (except for fuel injection diagnosis).

My guess is that the center button toggles between the features. You will need to look at the screen to see what kind of icon appears. an AC volt test will probably have an V with a squiggly line after it. DC volts with have a V with a straight or dotted line after it. Resistance will probably have an omega letter (looks like a horse shoe). It may also have a speaker icon along with it that can be turned on and off. As stated by others, the meter auto selects the range. the only time you should get a max reading on a car is if you are checking resistance and your circuit is open (thus infinite resistance). With most auto range meters, it takes a second or two for the meter to find the right range. You wont need a different meter. Just need to get this one figured out.
