I have a 1972 1608 with electronic ignition. Car runs fine but recently at highway speeds and sometimes at idle the engine sputters, and cuts out. the RPM's drop to 0, but because the car is going 60 MPH the engine comes back on and drives good for a while then it can run rough again. Every once in a while I'll get backfiring while coming to a stop then the car will run fine for a while. It all started on a ride through Marin county in CA. On the way home from Sausilito through the Napa area it started acting up, I thought it was the timing so I got a new cap and rotor, and timed it. It seemed fin but started acting up again recently. Do you think my Electronic ignition device is going bad, or something else? Please HELP!! LOL!!

sounds like you are chasing an electrical gremlin. glad its you and not me. first thing is a close inspection of wires associated with the coil, dizzy, etc. both ground and hot wires. check the wires plugged into the back of the ignition switch to makes sure nothing is hanging by a thread. you are looking for loose connection or worn insulation grounding on something. wiggle wires while the car is running to see if you can get the motor to die. After that, look at your mag pickup in the dizzy. inspect the wires as they can short easily.

Might be the coil going bad.
There is a group of us in the Sacramento area that has formed a club.
Let me know if you'd like some help. I'm only 30 minutes from Sac.

Next time it happens, observe your dash gages. If you see others also die or bounce to their OFF position, then it is probably the ignition switch contacts.
