Braking pulls to the right
Braking pulls to the right
Looking for some thoughts on this one. When i am driving and hit the brakes my fiat spider 76 it tends to pull to the right. Harder on the brakes the more it pulls. Any ideas/thoughts on what i can look at to fix it up? Thanks

Re: Braking pulls to the right
Your solution can go from simple to complex. Starting with simple, your brakes may just need adjusting. This means the caliper sliders are bound up on one side. try driving in reverse and slam on the brakes. Do this 2 or 3 times to see if that fixes the problem. If it does, this is just a temporary fix. You will need to pull the calipers and clean the wedges and the slider track. If this didnt do the job, then look at the condition of your flex lines at the front calipers. they can look fine but still be internally collapsing. After that, you could have a stuck caliper. you can test this by jacking the car up so tires are off the ground. have a buddy press the brakes and try to turn each wheel by hand. If the brakes pass all the tests, then you are looking at a suspension rebuild.

I am having the same problem on my '78. I am taking it to my mechanic Tuesday. I will let you know why he does.

like was said, can be many things. on cars that have had front end work done where that is all tight, i find its usually a rear caliper that is sticking that causes this. I have had to take my rears apart and free them up more than once over the years. kind of a PITA actually.

I had that problem and it was worn tie rods. Replaced them and the problem went away.

I recently de-glazed the front rotors and lightly sanded the pads. As some have said, the brakes on these cars are quite good if everything is up to snuff.

Re: Braking pulls to the right
Just got back from my mechanic. Learned a lot. He said there are several things to look for. If when applying the brake continually if the car rights itself then more than likely the brake line is clogged to the point that not enough fluld is getting through. If car continues to pull then either the brake line is totally clogged or the caliper is stuck or sticking. In my case the car was pulling to the right but my left caliper was not stuck but dragging. While on the rack the right wheel spun easily but the left was dragging. So I am replacing both front calipers so that they both will be the same. I am sure other things could cause this problem, but this has been my experience. Hope this helps.

Just an update. Just had new front calipers installed and solved my pulling problem.
