IAP Headlight Wiring Upgrade Kit

I got my kit in the mail today and after it was installed the lights seemed very bright and I am waiting for it to get dark outside now.
The installation took me 3 hours because most of the time I was debating with myself to cut half of the wiring kit off and go directly into my cars wiring harness. With all the wires and plugs it gets way to busy in the light buckets.
I ended up cutting out the connecting plugs on the left side and hardwired it to keep the chaos down.
If I would have to do it again I would do it from scratch or only use the relay and fuse part of the kit and put the rest in the trash but for now I am looking forward to see my H4th work 100% for the first time ever

One can do it easily and simply by putting 2 relays by the fusebox. Only need to run one wire, from the alternator to the relays, everything else you need is right there.

I ran a #10 wire from the alternator to a fuse panel mounted on fender well. Mounted relays next to the new fuse panel. I unplugged the drivers side light bucket and used the wire feeding the drivers side headlight to energize the new hi and lo beam relays. The relay power is fused by the original fuses. The headlights are fused by the new fuses. Did this close to 10 years ago and have had no issues.
What ever method you use make sure you use a good quality crimping tool and good quality crimp type terminals. Some of the wire kits I have seen for our cars although "new" are lesser quality than the original 30 year old wire and terminals.

I did Csaba's method, only the relays are under the glove box. Pulled a wire directly off the battery terminal since the battery is in the front. Whole thing took less than an hour and all of the wires you need are at the fuse box anyway.

I did it with 2 relays and a tap off the alternator. Used the existing leads to the lights as the trigger for the relays. Works great, just pick the right fuse sizes!

So, Csaba: if Santa brings me the Cibie H4 lights for Christmas this year, should s/he include some relays as well? I'm thinking the city light versions would go well with the Euro turn signal lenses.... .

Wow, the high beams are amassing and I can finally see where I am going and how fast I am going because the dash lights are now bright enough that I can read the gauges.
But the best thing is that my ignition switch is not burning up anymore.
I should have done that 7 years ago when I got the car.

Whatever circuit configuration you ultimately decide upon, homemade or store-bought, be sure that you or the vendor fuse the new power source. Somewhere along the line from the alternator, starter or battery, that new, big, honkin' supply wire must be protected, too. Most of the "ice cube" relays used for this purpose don't have any built-in protection.

Can't remember where I bought the wiring kit but it came with 2 relays, fused lead to hook to alternator, new ceramic 3 prong connectors for the new bulbs. I bout glass headlights off ebay, 7" that fit perfectly. Whole operation was about one hour including routing passenger side headlight wiring between front brace and radiator. Difference is as from moon to sun. I have a hi beam switch problem I am working on but the new wiring and everything worked flawlessly.
