Ok I read on another link that you needed either a 38 mm or 1.5 inch socket, went all around town and ended up finding a 21pc set that goes all the way to 48 mm. I can't get the bolt to budge, how does everyone else get these pulleys off? I am 6'6 and put quite a bit of weight on it and it rocks the car, but will not budge, is there a secret to it?
Also the alternator seems to be in good condition, but the pulley on the alternator is rusted pretty bad, where can I buy just the pulley part of the alternator?
thanks guys for the help.

You may have to use an impact wrench on the crank pulley.

Do you have the radiatior out, and the front grill? You can rent an electric impact wrench capable of 250 foot pounds for about 4-6 hours for around $12. You will need some long extensions and possibly a good strong universal joint attachment.
Are you locking the flywheel or just putting it in gear? If you are trying to break that nut loose with the car in gear then you are trying to turn over the engine backwards which is not recommended. You need to lock the flywheel. Remove the trans inspection plate and clamp a piece of angle iron along the block. Place an edge of the angle iron between the teeth. Righty tighty, lefty loosey.
A socket and cheater bar may sound like a good cheap idea; but if the nut unexpectedly breaks loose you could get hurt or damage the car, like dent the fender.

Almost forgot. When you put that nut back on don't use the impact wrench, use a torque wrench. For 71-72 cars its 87ft.lb For 73 on cars its 181ft.lb.
by the way what is the interior pully?

directly behind the outer crankshaft pulley is a small inner pulley, its pretty rusted along with the larger exterior one.manoa matt wrote:Almost forgot. When you put that nut back on don't use the impact wrench, use a torque wrench. For 71-72 cars its 87ft.lb For 73 on cars its 181ft.lb.

I already bought the socket and cheater bar set, and yes I almost did hurt myself, thats when i stopped to ask advice.

well i've never tried this on a fiat, but it's worked for me on other cars. it may not be the smartest way to go about it though...
put your socket on the crank nut, the put a big breaker bar on the socket, and position the breaker bar so that it's against something solid. like the frame, or the ground.
then blip the starter over with the key from the safety of the drivers seat.
good luck.
