strange electric issue

Post by lurch »

So I have been trying to get my 1975 on the road for about 2 years now and thought I was there. Then it would blow the fuse to the turn signal brake lights and dash gauges every time I turned the key. I found a bare wire under the dash that I think went to the stereo so I reattached it to the stereo. Now the fuse does not blow but now it will not start. It started fine before. If I remove the fuse that was blowing it starts up just fine. While it was running I tried to put the fuse back in and it died again. Has anyone heard of this happening?

here's a link to brad artigue's wire diagram. best bet it to look at it that way you know what wire is what and track your problem down. http://www.artigue.com/wp-content/uploa ... spider.pdf

i like figuring out wiring, so you can pm me if you'd like and we can work together to figure it out..

you have a dead short in the line that is blowing the fuse. If you connected the stereo line to the ground then you have created such a short. Disconnect the stereo to make sure you havent added another problem and start your search for the ground.

I disconnected the power to stereo which was the wire shorting out to see if that was the problem. No luck still dies.

So I start the car with the fuse removed and it starts right up and then when I re-install the fuse the "slow down" light on the dash comes on and engine dies. Does any one know what the "slow down" light is telling me?

Ah yes, but is it B, or J? or any numbers 1 thru 10 (#2?) The letters/numbers are posted on the fuse box cover and on the very back of the fuse box. Have you checked the back of the ignition switch to make sure all of the wires are attached to the back of the switch and in the correct locations???

Did you check the back of the ignition switch? The connectors have been known to come off and cause some strange problems

I have but I'll definitely recheck it to night. I had my starter stop working because of that.
