ok so i got the ignition wires on right i think, when i turn the key on things come on and starts like it suppose too
BUT
I have done was remove the clutser in which you all know it plug into a harness in which you can not plug them in wrong
so what happens is that i turn on the lite switch and the fuel gauge comes to life, key is off, key is on and still no fuel movement, turn on the lights and bingo, we got gas, i never touched the lite switch and nothing came undone, it all worked correct when i got it. does this have something to do with the ignition wires?

Re: goofy
With Steve's ( juvius help today,it possible that the switch is bad, there no power at the pink/black blue wire off the ignition, when the key is on
Can some one verify that there is suppose to be power there when the key is on.

Re: goofy
Jim, get Brad Artique's wiring diagram for the 71 if you don't have it already. My car had a couple of wires crossed initially when I got it and once I had the diagram and traced them out all was well. I will say that some of the circuits operate differently than the later year cars. Notable are the cooling fan- only works when the key is on, and the heater fan- works whether key on or off. This is opposite of later year cars. I may eventually rewire but for now keeping it mostly original but documenting what I change. Sounds like you have a bad ground for the instrument cluster. It/they should be totally independent of the light switch except for the gauge lights.

Re: goofy
Check the ground that goes to the instrument lights. If I remember correctly it is the same ground for the headlights circuit. Fuel gauge is/should be grounded in the trunk. I will take a look at the diagram when I get home tonight.

Re: goofy
Jim, I reviewed the electrical diagram. The only thing I can think of is that somehow the wires on the ignition switch are perhaps somehow mixed up. I would start there first and verify that the correct wires are going to the correct terminals on the back of the switch. They are spade connectors and have a habit of coming off from time to time. Let me know how you make out and we can go from there.

Re: goofy
I did some switching wires on the fuse panel. They where both hot, so it seems to work in controlling the gauges
Now!
On the 71 toggle switch for the lights, ! I got them all working, tail lights, headlines, dash, brakes ,sidelight all works , but I am just wondering if you if you can just switch on the running lights with out the headlite, it doesn't appear to work this way with this switch, does it or not work this way in the 71

Re: goofy
the switch should be a 3 position switch, dim, flicker and off...opps thats for lucas switches, yes you should be able to have just the parking lights and the main beams and side lights, tail lamps
