Prospective Spider Owner

Post by Spiderific »

Hi, I am a prosepctive Spider owner in Southwest Missouri. Considering a 1978 that is for sale locally. After 15 years of Jaguar ownership I'm not a stranger to wrenching on my own cars OR to seemingly-strange electrical issues. I would have a ton to learn about Fiats and this forum is chock-full of good information and helpful, hands-on advice. Thanks for having me!

Welcome aboard - the people on this site have helped me a great deal, I think a former Jag owner would have nothing to fear from a Fiat! There are many of the parts still available and plenty of free advice and sympathy to be had here.

Thanks John. I am actually a current Jaguar owner (1994 XJ6/XJ40). Still loving it after 15 years and 167k miles and and it is my daily driver. I too have a 'snow mobile', a 1997 Chevy Tahoe 2 door 4WD. So I guess I'm looking for a 'sun mobile'.

Did you get that '78? Advice from an old schooler - I'd stay under 1979; my personal preference is to go with an auto running distributor points and no catalyst in the exhaust (non-california in '78). Good Luck,

Well, everyone has their preferences. I like the injected Spiders or the early ones with the small bumpers.

No, no Spider yet, but it is still for sale. I believe the family that is trying to sell it (because the elderly gent that drove it had to give up driving) is hoping to get more for it than the market will bear.

If you definitely want a Spider don't get hung up on that one in particular.

There are plenty around. If your are patient you'll find a rust free (relatively) one and you'll be good to go. Anything else you can fix.

You may have to throw the net wider, but they are out there. Shipping a car isn't that expensive.

Check ebay every day. I use Search Tempest to check out all of Craigslist.
