I am in need of a new carb for my 77 Spider. It's an 1800 with a stock manifold. I am wondering if anyone has any experience on which replacement carb is best. Weber Redline has a 34 ADF replacement and of course there is always the DFEV. I know both will work, but any ideas which is easiest to tune and install with minimal carb knowledge?
Thanks!

I think the 77 Spider had a 32 ADF as stock, so use the 34 ADF. It pretty much plugs right in as is, water choke and everything. A fantastic carburetor.

I prefer the electric chokes, putting water into a carburetor is just a bad, bad idea
Re: DFEV or 34 ADF replacement?
if you go to the 32/36 DFEV for your 1800 engine......... you will soon discover idling issues. I am currently looking at replacing my idle jets to a smaller size.
Re: DFEV or 34 ADF replacement?
there would be issues with any carb that isn't jetted properly. I've put on tons of the dfev's and none of the cars have idling issues
Re: DFEV or 34 ADF replacement?
You are correct Mark, but what I was trying to say was that out of the box the 32/36 dfev is not jetted correctly for the 1800.... works just fine for the two litre... Same carb, same jets, different engines. So, the jets weren't improper, just not the correct choice for the 1800 engine.
from personal experience with both engines and same new carb. so if you wanna use the 32/36 dfev on the 1800, plan on changing some idle jets.
i too, chose the electric choke on purpose, which is how i ended up with the 32/36 for the 1800.

Re: DFEV or 34 ADF replacement?
Mark have you been replacing the jets when you install the DFEV? Seems to be about a 50/50 split in the votes here. I was thinking water in a carb sounded like a bad idea, but I am no engineer.
Re: DFEV or 34 ADF replacement?
I always tune the carb to any car when I do an install. Every engine is different. The last one I installed, the car sailed through a Calif smog test without any rejetting.
Re: DFEV or 34 ADF replacement?
Thanks Mark. I am in colorado, the air is thin here, so I do worry about drowning it.
Re: DFEV or 34 ADF replacement?
I'd order a jet pack with the carb, it will come with a selection of idle and main jets and air correctors.
Just a thought, I have a customer selling a brand new 32/36 dfev if you're interested.

You expose your entire manifold to water all the time - it has a water jacket and a gasket in between. The water chokes are external to the carburetor and, if you run a stock air filter, even a rupture won't get water in the carb.
Of course a stock air filter housing really sucks. But the likelihood of new hoses failing is pretty darn slim.

I guess you've never seen a choke housing subjected to electrolysis
