Fuel pump failure

Post by Tobi »

My car has been having the problem where I am driving and suddenly the motor quits. It started out about once a month and is now twice a day.
I don't have the double relay anymore so the fuel pump runs permanently with the ignition.
Well, when it happens I still have the ignition lights and the starter still works but the pump does not work (no sound).

About 10 minutes later it works again so I never have a chance to find the source of the problem.

The next time it happens I will be prepared to feed power to the pump in case that is the problem but that does not help me now.
I really want to do that road trip on Sunday and need to have that problem gone.

Question 1: If it is a broken Pump, is there a replacement pump that I could buy at a any parts store in town.

Question 2: Any other thoughts about the reason for the problem.

Thank you for any help in advance.

pretty sure you could find a pump at the chain stores.... get the bosch pump if you have the coin .... as to why they fail I don't know ... but they do .... with that being said .... it would be prudent to test the pump at point of failure to make sure that is the problem ..... best way to do that is 2 fold ... run some wires from the pump to the cab and hook a volt meter up and monitor voltage .... hook up a fuel pressure gauge and monitor the pressure normal running and at failure .... parts store will have a loaner pressure gauge and I used an old lamp cord for my wire extension into the cab .... for me the voltage was fine ... pressure just dropped down to 5 lbs..was every once in a while ...then got more frequent ...ran those tests .. failing pump ... replaced and all is good .... and get the good clamps ... cant remember what they are called but they are for injected pressure gas hose
