key chime switch in ingnition lock

My ignition switch (1984 pininfarina) jammed and woudn't turn to get switch out. Called a locksmith in Reno. He arrived and picked the lock and wiggled the key and got it to turn so he could withdraw the switch. He rebuilt the lock. He actually had a fiat lock rebuild kit. Key works fine now and it was only $100. However now the key chime doesn't turn off when the engine is running. It does make a pause before turning the key to start. I thought maybe something internally got shorted across inside the lock, but if that were the case removing the key wouldn't turn off the chime. It does. Insert the key and the chime starts up. remove it and it quits. Right now I have the chime disconnected at the switch's pigtail, but my wife wants the chimes to work properly. It is her car which I've been dabbling at for about 14 years. It is finally drivable and ready to go. Anyone got any ideas about what is causing the chime to keep chiming when engine is running? I don't see how it can be in the switch because it turns on and off properly. Could the seat belt timer have something to do with it. I have a wiring diagram, but I'm not real keen on wiring diagrams. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks--Joe

The chime is only supposed to sound when a door opens and the key is in the ignition switch: check the door switches. between the hinges.

On my 1981 the chime switch is a separate 2 pin connector from the ignition switch. If you unplug that and the chime stops the problem is still in the ignition switch. I haven't taken an ignition switch apart but I believe the "key in ignition" switch is on the end of the ignition switch where you insert the key. The other switch contacts are located where the wires attach to the ignition switch.

The switch in the ignition switch and the door jamb switch both must be closed for the chime to sound (unless there is a short). Key "in" and door closed = no chime; Key "in" and door open = chime; Key "out" and door open or closed = no chime.

Thanks for the thought, spider 2081. George I think I'll check the door switches. I called IAP and they thought it could be door switches, but they then went to the relay as a probable source of the problem. I hate to get into the relay because The Air conditioning unit must be dropped and it is a pain getting it reattatched. So the switches I'll be checking first. I am not and home right now so I'll have to wait until I get back. Thanks fellas for your information.--Joe
