81 spider 2000 starts every time, but then quits dead in about 30 seconds. If I try to restart right away, it will not.
If I wait one minute or so it starts perfectly, but then dies in 30 seconds.
Can some one point me in the right direction. I was taking the car this Saturday to a show, but now I am stuck.
Thank You, Marty

My first guess is that the fuel pump is failing But what do I know

Need a lot more info to help. When it won't restart, will it crank?? If it does crank OK, you need to check for fuel (crack the CSI line) and spark (old plug in coil wire or plug wire)

Yes, Car always cranks very well. just quits after initial 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Could it be the relay or fuel pump ground?majicwrench wrote:Need a lot more info to help. Just guessing
Have you checked for leaks in the air intake? The hose that connects the AFS to the throttle body is what I would check first. Any air leak here could cause your problem.
Does the fuel pump run when the AFS flap is held open?
How long has it been since the fuel filter has been changed?
Have you removed distributor cap and inspected the cap, rotor, and pick up wires.

Sounds like fuel starvation, clogged line, letting just enough through to allow pressure to slowly build, then quickly be used up and not refreshed at the rate of use.

I would really doubty it is something like a clogged line, that's not the kind of problem you would have. Ditto with the air intake ductwork, which can certainly cause issues, but not dying/won't restart that consistantly.
BUT you really really need to check some things before you start messing with other things, find out if it is losing spark or fuel when it dies. A fuel pressure guage "t"ed into system and a timing light hooked up and pointing where you can see flash.
Yes, it could be the realy or fuel pump ground, but it could also be about 1000 other things, many more likely. You have got to test somethings first to get a clue where to look.
