turn signal troubleshooting

Post by 1983Pinin »

On my 1983 Spider, the rear right turn signal does not work. I get a brief flash on the inside panel indicator light, and I hear the click/clock/click/clock of the relay, but no light. Left directional is fine--interior indicator lights flash and both directionals work. This rear directional light used to work ( car passed inspection 4 months ago ).
I took out the bulb, which looked original but OK, and replaced with a new bulb. Still no joy.
Last bit of diagnostics-- hazard lights all flash , except for that right rear light.
Any suggestions, other than a wiring traceback?

This happens when you have the wrong bulbs installed - and it doesn't seem to matter which position. Example: I had the wrong bulbs (dual instead of single, or single instead of dual, I don't recall which) in the front blinkers and it made the rear ones blink through the brake position. Weird stuff with these lights.

Check the ground.

Check the power to it with a voltmeter.

Yes, check ground and power at the light socket. Those circuit boards that hold the bulbs can have poor connections over time. It can have a bad connection between the bulb socket and the board, or between the board and the electrical connector.
Have you tried wiggling the bulb? Sometimes it just needs to be in a slightly different position and it will work - for a while :-)
