Fuel pump, horn and rad fan not turning on?

Post by Funcar »

I was finally getting set to drive my Spider to storage/workshop. Previously had taken a few drives around the neighbourhood even though I don't have all the lights working yet. At any rate tried to get the car running as it was -1 C. It did start up and I worked at warming it up for 15 mins. Turned it off to go get ready for the drive.( long underwear etc. )Came out prepared to go and found the fuel pump didn't come on when I turned the key. Also the horn didn't work nor the rad fan.(I had bypassed the thermal switch until I get a new one.) Checked all the fuses which I had just replaced. Checked the power to the fuel pump and yes it is there. Fuel pump is new.

Any suggestion as where to go next would be appreciated. I wonder if " Gerogio" is being stubborn about going into storage!

Easy to check the connections at the back of the ignition switch and the first connector in the line, C31. Poor/loose connections here cause odd, known problems! :(

On my 1981 the horn and radiator fan are on the same fuse. That may be true on your 72 as well. I could be wrong, but I thought the 72 had a mechanical fuel pump, so perhaps that got wired onto the same fuse as well. I'd start there.

I agree - sounds like a fusing / connection issue.

FWIW - I've put my fan on a dedicated circuit. Thermo switch triggers a relay which provides fused power solely to the fan.

Thanks for the tips on my electrical problem. It was a loose or faulty connection. I played with most connections under the dash; under the hood and in the trunk. I had been working on the lights and replaced all fuses previous to my problem so must have left a connection loose. I will concentrate on my electical system over the winter.

Now keeping my fingers crossed for this November thaw to continue so I can drive the car to storage. I need to have my son in law available to move the 2 trucks out of the way. The drive is about 20 kilometers and my gamble is will the spider make it as it has only been driven around the block a couple of times in 25 years. Wish me luck!

P.S. aj81spider. My Spider is a combination of a 73 and 75 ( I think :?: . The battery is in the trunk. When I go over the wiring there are lots of splices and unconnected wires.
