2000 Spider been sleeping a long time

Post by Unpluggedone »

1980 Fiat 2000, Johns Creek, GA
Bought new by friend in Winnipeg, Canada, driven to California a week later, I've bought it in 1986. 35,000 miles, while running down the highway, 6 years ago it slowly lost power and stopped 2 miles later. towed it home, where its been resting. Got the kids through high school, now it's time for me. Spark, fuel checked, will fire on the starting injector but nothing further. Pulled timing covers, looks to me like one cam is off a notch. Can timing belt really SLIP?

with the key in the on position (not start position). motor off. push the AFM door open and see if the fuel pump turns on. If not then you may have a bad dual relay. There is also an in-line fuse behind the instrument cluster that would also cause the dual relay not to work,

Also - check the fuel pump is consistently delivering fuel / getting power.

Definitely check the power at the fuel pump before you replace the dual relay. Don't ask me how I know this...

if it has bee sitting a long while, i would toss a new timing belt in so at least you know the top and the bottom are in perfect time.

Unpluggedone, seems we are just a few miles apart. I have a new to me 79, carb car. Perhaps we can share notes as we go about these projects?
