Can anyone help me identify what the cable that runs through the cover plate that surrounds the gear stick is for please (1976 1800cc model). I've recently rust-proofed the floor pan and in the process took everything out including the center consoles etc. and foolishly didn't label the wiring (thinking I'd remember it all fine - yes, lesson learnt!).
But in trying to put everything back together again I'm now left with 2 possibles that can plug into the terminal connector block (the one that runs through this cover plate into the depths of the gears): a connector that has 3 wires and a connector that has 2 wires. I've looked at some wiring diagrams but can't see what this is.
I've tried both and to be honest everything seems to work ok regardless. I'm thinking therefore that it might be something to do with redundant emissions sensors, long since stripped out.
Take pity - any ideas please?

Is the 2 wire for the reverse/back up light? If original, on '78 on I think the wires would be white and blue/white on the harness/connector side. You could check these other diagrams at http://www.artigue.com/fiat/ for earlier models and other trans switch wires.

Yes I think you're right. That didn't even occur to me so goes to show I shouldn't be let loose on these things. I'll give it a try when I get home from work. Thanks for your help.

Don't be so hard on yourself....95% of us knew nothing about these cars (except how to drive them) when we started, so that's what this website is all about.....saving time and getting educated!
