Hazards and Turning Signals just stopped work?! Help!

Post by Jzagro »

hello.

So. My turning signals and hazards had worked just a few weeks ago the last time I had started my 1978 Fiat just to make sure everything was still working.

I had tried them yesterday and they didn't work! Nothing. I started by trying the turning signals and they didn't respond. The dashboard indicator didn't light up either like it previously had when I used them.

I thought maybe it was just the turning signals but my hazards no longer work either.

I was doing a lot of body work this previous weekend and there was tons of dust in the air of my garage.

Is there anyway this dust could have gotten into the ground or something of the turning signals? Where is the relay for the turning and hazards located? I have tried the garage manual and I cannot seem to make any sense of it.

If you could let me know, that would be fantastic! Pictures would help greatly! Let me know if I left anything out! or need any further info.

Check the fuses, and turn them. Even if they look good corrosion at the ends can prevent current flow. By turning them you get them to work again.
It's best to replace all the fuses every few years just to keep corrosion at bay.

So I have checked, turned, and messed(spun, switched around) with the fuses and no problem seems to be coming from them.

How are the turning signals and hazard lights connected? Does both their wiring meet at a specific place which may be causing them to not work?

The hazard flasher swich is a common hub for various electricals including hazards and turn signals. So is the pink wire from the back of your ignition switch (it also piggybacks power to your ignition coil).
Also since you say you've been messing with body work, maybe you disconnected wiring from your tail lights or you re-connected their grounds to a painted surface. Somewhere along the line you may have inadvertently agitated some grounds while you were working.

They will stop working if you accidentally knock their spade connectors off the ground stars on the front fender. There is also a ground wire that connects to each tail lamp assembly via their mounting nuts that can stop them from working if you miss one of the connections on reassembly. Think of it as chasing down a bad connection on a string of Christmas lights.

Really time to get out the V/Ohm meter to see if you have broken grounds or no positive feed going to the bulbs. These connections are all exposed inside the trunk and are fairly easy to get to. Having the battery in the trunk make this somewhat easier to check since you have the definitive source for both positive and negative within easy reach.

I believe they are on the same fuse. The turn signal circuit passes through the hazard switch, as when the hazard light are switched on the turn signal circuit gets switched off. If the electrical plug from the back of the hazard switch has come off or it's loose, then it may make both hazards and turn signals inoperative.
I suppose the hazard switch could be bad too, but it seems unlikely that both circuits inside it went bad at the same time.

Thank you! Found out that the hazard switch had been disconnected when I was seeing an alternative for the radio. Thanks for all the help! Some much great information.
