Hi to the forum. I have just bought a 1968 spider, (red) with a hardtop and will be looking and using all the useful information on this site.
The plans I have for the vehicle is to get it mechanically sound and possibly interior done before this seasons with a view to the bodywork next winter
I would like to find out the history of the vehicle as the previous owner thought it was an american Import but there are some really old Italian stickers in the Windows. Is there a way of tracing where the vehicle went when first built?
look forward to picking all of your brains on these vehicles

Hi, nice to hear form you! The US models and European market models had quite a few differences, although some of these may have been changed over the years.
US models were different from Euro ones in these things: Speedometer in MPH, gauges in 2 languages and units, taillights had all red lenses, side markers front and rear (Euro had a smaller turn signal on the front fender only), emissions compliance plate on the radiator support (in the engine compartment in front of the radiator), DHSA carburetor (Euro was 34DFH), overriders on the bumpers, seats with headrest.
Please post pics!
Thanks,

Yipee another 68 (I'm assuming it's a 124)
We accepted it without any of the mods the Americans demanded.
We Canadians are so EZ.
Welcome aboard, love to see some pics and compare.
Don't forget the Canadian version. The early 68 "Canadian" version (yes there is such a thing) was slightly different than the later US version...no rear side markers, no backup light, no headrest. no over-riders on bumpers. By late 68-69 the Canadian and American versions were the same. From what I have been told, the Americans wouldn't accept the 68 without those (safety) modifications.vandor wrote:The US models and European market models had quite a few differences

Hello and Welcome!
The 124 Spider registry maintained by a club in Germany appears to be permanently lost, and I don't know of any other method to trace the provenance of your car. You do have a database available through Experian, similar to our CarFax, that might have some clues. Maybe your Department for Transport has serchable info.
When you undertake your interior restoration, maybe you'll find evidence under the rear seat. All manner of items have been found by our members
