early wiring - black wire from alt to ignition switc

Post by juvius »

I've been working on so much other stuff on the car over a long time. now I can't remember what to do about the black wire from the alternator to the ignition switch. I did the 95 amp alternator upgrade, where the black wire goes to the starter. Now I cannot figure out what i'm supposed to run to pin 30/1 of the ignition switch. this is a wire harness from a 1970. am I supposed to leave it empty? am I supposed to run another wire to it from or to somewhere.. any help would be appreciated.

thanks,
steve

You'd have to look a wiring diagram to confirm, but I am fairly sure the black wire is one of the wires that bring power to the ignition switch, so it would go on the output stud of the alternator.

I Checked a 1970 Spider wire diagram and there is a large diameter black wire connecting the alternator output to the ignition switch. My 81 diagram shows this wire to be a 2.5 mm or # 12 AWG. It is an unfused hot all the time wire. If you are rewiring I would install a #10 wire. With wire, bigger is often better unless it will physically over stress the terminal it attaches to.

Since the output stud on the alternator has a wire to the starter, I ran another large gauge wire from the starter stud to the ignition switch.

The original configuration had the charging current flowing through the wire to the starter and the current for the ignition switch flowing through separate a wire from the alternator. Your rewire has both the charging current and the ignition switch current flowing through the same wire out of the alternator. Your alternator output wire to the starter should be at least a #6 AWG in this case.
