exhaust system
exhaust system
I am rebuilding my 1608 engine with higher compression pistons. I know I need to upgrade the manifolod to something freer (4-2-1?). I also don't know what the best exhaust system would be. I hear a lot about ANSA and stainless. This will be for street use and I like a resonant note, but don't want to wake the neighbors. What is the best combination for performance, price and longevity?
Re: exhaust system
"best" is what i call a relative word. your "best" usually will not agree with my "best" or anyone else's "best". it is purely a matter of opinion.
an easier to answer question would be "What do you use?"
I have two Spiders, both with a 4-2-1, both without the cat, both with stock diameter pipes. Both with a resonator pipe.
the two litre has an ANSA dual tipped muffler. Love the sound, and have for years. The 1800 has a Stainless Steel muffler by Danny O'donnell. Love the sound...which is completely different than the ANSA. neither of which would ever disturb the neighbors.... unless i needed them to do so.
get with some Fiat folk and spend some time with them. listen to the various exhausts they have, and make your decision that way. i guaruntee that you will find MANY different combinations of equipment with various sounds produced. Plus, you get the enjoyment of sharing your Fiat passion with like-minded folks.

Re: exhaust system
thanks, if you could chose only one what would it be. also is there any improvement to be gained by having a larger diameter pipe with the 4-2-1 manifold?
Re: exhaust system
Mike is correct that "best" is all relative. Are you looking just for a certain exhaust note or performance increase?
Re: exhaust system
Optimally both.
I have had very powerful, torquey cars of other exotic makes and am not trying to make the spider something it really isn't. But while I'm restoring it, I would like to reasonably optimize it's performance for the street, and have a nice baritone if slightly throaty exhaust note.
I always liked my old stock 73 sound. My 71 was modified before I got it and has a straight pipe to a single rear stock muffler. That is a little more growl than I want.
