Fuel Injection Swap Checklist??

Post by Pete112 »

Hi all,

Although I'm still working on the title issues for my '80 2000 (if you read my new members post a few days ago) but I'm trying to get all of my ducks in a row so I can begin working as soon as its all settled (fingers crossed). I have a carbed '80 right now and I would love to upgrade to FI. Does anyone have a list of parts that I'll need in order to convert everything over? I'll start with my thoughts so please correct me if I'm wrong:

Gas Tank (I believe this is different for FI)
Fuel Pump
Intake Manifold
Exhaust Manifold (guessing this because mine doesn't have a place for an oxygen sensor)
Oxygen Sensor (should buy new)
Air Filter Housing/piping
Fuel Rail
Injectors (should probably buy new)
Mass Air Flow Sensor
ECU (does this just emcompass the one control unit?)
Wiring Harness
Temperature Sensors (I think it takes more than one so I'm not sure if mine would already have the holes for them?)

That's off the top of my head. There's probably more that I'm not thinking of right now, but I guess that's why I'm asking in the first place :) E.g., does FI use the same ignition switch? What about fuse boxes? Fuel hoses? etc.

Speaking of this, does anyone know of instructions that are written up for this conversion? I can't find info anywhere but I find it hard to believe its not a popular one.

Thanks for everyone's help!
So Cal Mark

same ign switch and fuse box; the pump used an inline fuse. You'll also need the dual relay and ecm.

You also need a throttle body/plenum and fuel pressure regulator (bolts to fuel rail). The auxillary air regulator, mass airflow sensor and ECU can each set you back $200-$300. Best bet is to find an FI parts car. For instructions on conversion, I would search on http://archive.mirafiori.com/

I've got most of the major parts you need, PM or email me if intestered I don't have any wiring harness or connectors which will be the hardest thing to locate. However by the time you assemble all the components you probably will spend enough to buy a good running FI car. A few months ago I picked up a 80FI for $400 just to tear a part.

You could just go with a new/better carb, but that will also set you back about $400.

I'd be trying to find a nice set of twin Webers rather than trying to fit all that injection gear. Once jetted up properly on a dyno the Webers will offer you just as much performance and they sound better too. :D

the driveability of a nice FI setup is sure nice though!

There was a FI Wiring loom and ECU on Ebay last week - I think it included the double relay.

I will agree with Mark...a properly tuned FI set up is way better then any carb set up you could run :D

Now if only mine could be tuned like Mark suggested( just bought my car and am still working out all the bugs)

It does sound like quite a bit of part hunting to go through - its even more than I listed! Not to mention getting it to work. Maybe I will look for a parts FI car. I would just use mine for a parts car considering it doesn't run, but its in such rust-free condition that I can't bare to do it! Rust-free is a rare find in the NorthEast!

Well, thanks for everyones help and suggestions. Let me know if you think of anything else.
