Newb in Nor Cal

Post by turbodogs02 »

I've been lurking here for a few weeks, and I've finally pulled the trigger on an '81 Spider 2000 this past Saturday. Great running, good mechanicals, no rust! She'll need some loving on the body work to fix the bumps and bruises and some clean up on the interior and it'll be a nice little car....I can't wait to get started with her. This place has been a great resource so far!

Welcome. I, too, joined the club with a purchase of an '81, late last year. You might want to retrofit right away a fuel strainer between the tank and the fuel pump, if one does not yet exist. It's an easy fix that rectifies a serious design defect. The strainer will trap large pieces of trash in your fuel system and therefore reduce the chance of damage to the fuel pump. (Yes, there is a fuel filter, but it is downstream of the pump.) I plan to replace my strainer after I've put some miles on the car and will cut it open to see exactly how much gunk it has collected. Hopefully, this will be before it restricts the fuel flow.

Quick question, Do us carbed guys need to retrofit these strainers near the tank in addition to the fuel filter we already have in the engine compartmenr? It couldn't hurt right, or would it somehow create an extra drag on our mechanical fuel pumps? I do pay special attention to changing my see-thru fuel filter at least once a year and i do see some fine sand particles.

If your fuel tank and pickup are in good condition; no. The pickup, part of the sending unit mechanism, has a fine mesh "sock" on its end, preventing objects large enough to damage the fuel pump from passing.
