WOW!!...that was a close scare!

I thought for sure I had a blown head gasket...and because of the knowledge and info this site has to offer, I am feeling great...I started off replacing the electric fan with a after market one you can pick up at Kragens...I checked the thermo switch on the radiator and found no continuity...while switching out the fan, I found a water leak at the water pump to hose connection...fixed that and connected my fan wires according to make it run in the right direction and topped off the radiator and was off to the store...got about 2 miles and my temp went from 190F straight to close to the red mark...drove it back home and sprayed the hose over the rad. and tried to cool it down to open the rad. cap to add more water...the coolant was white foam and at that point I thought the engine was toast...blown head gasket for sure...let it sit for about an hour and visited the forum here to check to see if anyone else had experienced the same thing...I read the thread regarding water temp from a guy in Italy...at the end is where Mark had described on how to remove the air bubbles...so I went out to the garage and found my funnel and had to use 3 different size hoses to get a tight seal at the bleeder hole...removed the rad. cap and started filling the coolant through the funnel...when the coolant level was topped off I reinstalled the cap on the rad. and continued to pour water and then squeezed the lower rad. hose below the t-stat until it felt firm...continued to do the same on all the other hoses until I had no more air in the cooling system...pulled out the funnel and reinstalled the bleeder cap...plugged in the fan( I had to piggy back the ground wire cuz the thermo switch doesn't work)...and started up the car and drove it around the block first, then to the store and it stayed right at 190F :D :D :D ...this made me really happy and becuz of this forum and all the great tech info listed...I thank you all very much...great forum guys :D 8)

My next project will be to replace the thermo switch and also hook up a emergency switch inside incase the new thermo switch fails

Way to go '81. I feel the same way about this forum. I don't know how many times I've been in the middle of something, and came to the forum to get help. Within minutes, most times, I got the help I needed.
Ain't it great! Glad to hear the "burping" did the trick.
