Ticking sound when key is inserted in ignition
I have a ticking sound that sounds like a clock when I begin to insert the key into the ignition. I only have to put it in about 1/8" and it starts. It continues if key is pushed all the way in. It stops when pulled out. This is on a 80 spider. I didn't have it before I pulled a bunch of wires off for painting. I believe I have everything wired back up correctly. There are a few wires yet to hook up (front blinkers, counsel wires, rear plate lights). Any suggestions what causes this? Thanks.

where is the ticking coming from. If under the glove box, it may be a relay.

Re: Ticking sound when key is inserted in ignition
Your car came equipped with a key chime (rings when the key is in the ignition).
You may have a bad chime that is trying to ring but is making a ticking sound instead.
The chime is a black box located on the relay mounting plate under the glove box.
Try unplugging the chime box and see if your clicking noise goes away. If you don't want the chime, you can simply leave it unplugged-- it won't hurt anything.

Re: Ticking sound when key is inserted in ignition
I did have the car powered previously with no chime (may be disconnected already, but I'll check). I also had it running for a couple of five minute test runs when I first bought it last fall at an auction. Never heard any ticking. It sounds like it comes from the ignition switch or very close.

If the ticking stops when you close the door it is probably the "Key In Ignition" warning chime.azruss wrote:where is the ticking coming from. If under the glove box, it may be a relay.

It could be the windshield wiper delay timer. If your wiper mechanics are frozen and the wipers on on in the delay position you will hear the delay timer and the wipers do not move.

The white plug under passenger dash that has a red, yellow, grey and blue wires is disconnected. Not sure if that is the chime. I do have the door off now, as before when I didn't have the noise the door was on. So is the white push button on the door jamb actually to actuate the chime for door and not a light inside (which I don't have anyway)? The wipers worked fine before.

I would make sure the steering column wiper switch is in the full up position.(off) I am pretty sure the seat belt chime and the "key in ignition" chime are the same chime device. The door jam switch activates the chime if the key is in the ignition and the door is open. If you push in the door jam switches or unmount them and let them dangle does the clicking stop??

Re: Ticking sound when key is inserted in ignition
I went out today and hooked the battery up. Asked my wife to come out and hold the passenger door switch while I hold the driver switch in (both doors are off). I first wanted to show her what I was hearing. Put key in ignition and no ticking. Turned key no ticking. Not sure why it stopped. So we didn't have to hold switches in after all. Makes me think it will come back.
