Fog light wiring on Francesca

Post by wop »

So I am outfitting Francesca with fog lights.
In Ontario, fog lights switch off when high beams are turned on. I have the IAP relay kit along with AR H4 headlights c/w halogen lamps.
I have no clue how to integrate the fog lights into this configuration.

Also I am currently driving headlights on all the time because DTR lights are required.
Would it be wise to use only the fogs as DTR, or maintain the headlights as DTR and switch the fogs on only when needed?
Either way, I have no clue how to wire them to work as needed (see above)
Any advice would be appreciated.

Two ways off the top of my head. 1 power the fog light with a relay that is normally off and is controlled , turned off and on, by the low beams. In this mode the fog lights will only work with the low beams.
2 power the fog lights with 2 relays the first is normally on and is controlled, turned off and on, by the with the high beams. Off when the high beams are on and on when the high beams are off. Run the out put of this relay to the switch for the fog lights which goes to the 2nd relay that powers the fog lights. With this set up you can run the fog lights with or without the low beams.

Buy a standard "ice-cube" relay; the kind used in the headlight relay kits. McMaster-Carr p/n 9672K32 or equivalent.

Source a fused 12v circuit in your car. Attach a toggle or rocker switch for your fog lamps. From the switch, run a wire to terminal 87 on the relay. From the relay, run a wire from terminal 30 to the fog lamps. Ground the earth terminal of the lamps. Interrupt the + wire going to the hi-beam of one headlamp. Run wires from terminal 85 and 86 to this circuit. That is, the feed to a high beam goes thru the relay via terminals 85 and 86 before going to the lamp.

The fog lamps operate when you actuate the fog lamp switch. When the hi beams are on, the coil in the relay is energized and the circuit is opened and the fog lights go off.

I don't like the idea of fog lamps as DRLs. What you want is a weak, wide beam ... the opposite of a fog lamp pattern.

Buy H4 lenses with DRLs to solve your daytime running problem - you direct wire the DRLs to +12V. Solves the DRL issue.

As for the fog lamps, why tax the electrical system with these? If you just have to use them then draw the power from the low beam circuit only and run a separate switch into the car to interrupt that circuit en route to the lamps. That way when the brights turn on they'll turn off.
